1 Corinthians 3:6-9 — I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the growth. So neither he who plants nor he who waters is anything, but only God who gives the growth. He who plants and he who waters are one, and each will receive his wages according to his labor. ⁹For we are God’s fellow workers. You are God’s field, God’s building.

Philippians 2:13 — Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, so now, not only as in my presence but much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure.

YOU ARE NOT GOD JR.

For a long time, I mistook loving people for fixing them.

My mindset was simple: “If I could just get them to change, everything would be fine.” My heart was in the right place. I wanted people to grow, especially in their faith, so I used my knowledge like a tool to correct them on the spot. I told myself that telling the hard truth was worth whatever friction it caused: Even if it damages our relationship, at least they’ll know.

Over time, I began to treat every relationship like a fix-it project: my parents, my friends, my community. There is real, undeniable power in truth. But when we use it to force someone into compliance, we weaponize it. Truth forced without love doesn’t heal people; it destroys the very bridge you need to reach them.

Light Yagami, Death Note

Armed with a supernatural notebook, Light tries to purge the world of crime and become the self-appointed god of a new order, auditing every human life. His obsessive desire to control others completely destroys his own soul, turning him into a paranoid tyrant. His fall is a classic study in hubris: the ancient temptation to play God, audit human hearts, and assume the role of cosmic judge (Isaiah 14:14).

Jesus Christ, the One True God

Christ, the one true and perfect God, shows us a different narrative. Rather than forcing His will on others, He spoke the truth in love.

Truth in love (alētheuontes de en agapē): comes from Ephesians 4:15, where Paul instructs the Ephesian church not to be tossed about by false doctrine and human cunning, but to hold fast to truth in love.

While “speaking the truth” is an accurate translation, the Greek word carries a much deeper, active meaning. Let’s break it down:

Alētheuontes (ah-lay-THOO-on-tes, “Truthing”): An active verb meaning to uncover reality, practice absolute transparency, refuse to manipulate facts, and align your entire existence—both words and deeds—with what is real. It is about living and embodying the truth in a relationship.
En (en, “In”): This specifies the atmosphere or sphere of influence. Truth is never allowed to exist in a vacuum, nor is it meant to be weaponized in the open air. It must be completely wrapped and saturated within agapē.
Agapē (ah-gah-PAY, “Sacrificial Love”): A deliberate, willful commitment to act for the absolute highest good of another person, even at great personal cost. The goal is spiritual maturity and transformation within a relationship, not mere information transfer.

What Agapē Looks Like in Practice

When a doctor has devastating news about a patient’s health, agapē doesn’t mean casually tossing out facts from across the room. It means sitting down, looking them in the eye, delivering the hard truth gently, and walking with them through the treatment.

Agapē asks: “Will sharing this information actually transform this person into a more loving, peaceful, and whole human being?”
Agapē says: “I cannot control the future, and I cannot control you. But I can control how I treat you right now. I will choose to be honest, present, and safe for you today.”
Agapē acts: “The world feels very fractured right now, so I’m trying to volunteer more at the food pantry to bring light to our community. Would you ever want to come with me?”

Jesus perfectly lived out agapē love. He never manipulated people into the kingdom or spread chaotic fear and panic; He finished the work assigned to Him and entrusted judgment to God (1 Peter 2:23). When we drop our self-appointed roles as “God Junior,” we can finally start loving others with the truthing in agapē love Christ first showed us (1 John 4:19).

Speaking truth in love won’t guarantee a peaceful reaction. Even Jesus was rejected. But when relationships break, let it be because of the weight of the cross, not the arrogance in our approach.

DEVOTIONAL

1. Policing the World

God has called you to be a faithful stewardship of what He’s given you, not the savior of the world.

1 Thessalonians 4:11–12 — ...and to aspire to live quietly (hēsychazō), and to mind your own affairs, and to work with your hands, as we instructed you, so that you may walk properly before outsiders and be dependent on no one.

Greek Toolkit (Hēsychazō, hay-soo-KHA-zo): To lead a quiet life, settling down from unnecessary turmoil.
The Anime Connection: Instead of focusing on his immediate studies, relationships, and personal integrity as a student, Light abandoned his actual lane to police the entire globe. He traded local faithfulness for cosmic delusions of grandeur, missing the quiet obedience right in front of him.

The Takeaway:

We often fixate on shiny external problems because it’s easier than facing internal ones. What would your life look like if you asked God for the strength to focus on what you can actually control — yourself, your character, your home, and your daily assignment?

2. Controlling Others

Trying to force an awakening in someone else’s life replaces prayer with manipulation and turns every relationship into an audit.

1 Corinthians 3:6-9 — I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the growth. Soneither he who plants nor he who waters is anything, but only God who gives the growth. He who plants and he who waters are one, and each will receive his wages according to his labor. For we are God’s fellow workers (Synergos). You are God’s field, God’s building.

Greek Toolkit (Synergos, soon-ER-gos): A fellow worker or co-laborer; one who labors shoulder-to-shoulder with another under a shared purpose.
The Anime Connection: Look at Light’s manipulation of Kiyomi Takada or how he forced Ray Penber’s fiancée (Naomi Misora) into a psychological chess match. Light treated human beings entirely as pieces to be coerced. His obsession with forcing others’ hearts into alignment led to absolute isolation, proving that trying to override someone else’s free will is a catastrophic dead end.

The Takeaway:

Relinquishing control means trading micromanagement for faithfulness. When you stop auditing (or managing) everyone around you, you replace anxiety-driven manipulation with prayer, trusting that God alone transforms a human heart.

3. Justifying Ourselves

Attempting to engineer your own holiness through willpower alone will only leave you exhausted, frustrated, and burnt out.

Philippians 2:13 — ...for it is God who works (energeō) in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure.

Greek Toolkit (Energeō, en-erg-EH-oh): The active verb meaning to put forth supernatural power or work within the believer. God drives sanctification from the inside out through His active, indwelling energy (energōn).
- Note: The problem is when we treat sanctification like a self-help project. Notice that the promise of Philippians 2:13 (”it is God who works in you”) immediately follows the command in Philippians 2:12 to “work out your own salvation with fear and trembling.” We work hard because He is at work within us.
The Anime Connection: Think of Light’s elaborate scheme where he voluntarily forfeits ownership of the Death Note to wipe his own memories, relying entirely on his own brilliant intellect, self-generated discipline, and willpower to execute absolute righteousness. Without an anchor outside himself, his moral compass completely shattered under the weight of his own unchecked ambition.

The Takeaway:

You can’t manufacture your own sanctification. Real transformation flows from yielding your human efforts to God.

WAKE UP CALL

You are not responsible for changing others, saving the world, or manufacturing your own salvation. God is more than able.

Christ did not come to coerce the world, but to win our hearts through obedience to the Father and sacrificial love (John 18:36). And as His followers, we are invited to mirror after Him in that same sacrificial, patient love. There is freedom in knowing that the entire world doesn’t rest on your shoulders. Steward the things directly in your hands, love people deeply without needing to audit them, and leave the rest to the Creator. He’s already got it handled.

Bonus Application

Love is inherently relational and personal. Because of that, how we express love may change depending on who we’re walking alongside. To contextualize this, look at:

1 Thessalonians 5:14-18 — And we urge you, brothers, admonish the idle, encourage the fainthearted, help the weak, be patient with them all. See that no one repays anyone evil for evil, but always seek to do good to one another and to everyone. Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.

I love this passage, because it shows how love may manifest differently depending on the person/relationship. Paul lists three distinct groups in Scripture, and the Greek verbs match their specific conditions:

The Fainthearted: This describes people who are discouraged, grieving, or overwhelmed. Rather than ‘admonish them’, we are encouraged to comfort, console, and speak truth tenderly to them.
The Weak: These people are spiritually or emotionally exhausted. It carries the idea of someone struggling to stand. For these, we are called to support or hold onto them. That requires ongoing, long-term patience, not swift correction.
The Idle (or Unruly): This describes those who are out of step or refusing to pull their weight. This is the only group in this verse designated for admonishment (a firm, loving warning), and even this should be done in love.

TAVERN TALK

Where have you exhausted yourself this past week trying to force a change in someone else’s heart or behavior?
Where in your life have you played “God Jr.”? Where have you reached to assume ownership over something that is not in your control?
What specific relationship do you need to stop auditing and start simply loving with Christ’s grace this week?

May God Bless You and Keep You

APPENDIX

GREEK

Hesuchazo (To Lead a Quiet Life): Settling down into a stable, focused posture of local stewardship.
- Origin/Linguistics: Rooted in hesuchos, meaning quiet, tranquil, or undisturbed by frantic external chaos.
- Evolution: Evolved from describing a state of physical stillness to an intentional posture of minding one’s own business and avoiding disruptive meddling.
- Biblical Meaning & Modern Relevance: In a modern culture obsessed with online clout and saving the whole world through social media outrage, this word calls Christian men back to quiet, disciplined, local faithfulness (1 Thessalonians 4:11).
Synergos (Fellow Worker): A partner laboring alongside others under a master authority.
- Origin/Linguistics: Derived from syn (together with) and ergon (work), it describes individuals pulling on the same oar toward a shared objective.
- Evolution: Moved from general cooperative physical labor in classical Greek to describe spiritual co-laborers in the New Testament.
- Biblical Meaning & Modern Relevance: Paul uses this term to strip away individual pride in ministry. You are a co-laborer under God, not the general manager; your job is faithful execution, leaving the divine results to Him (1 Corinthians 3:9).
Energeo / Energon (At Work / Effectual Power): The active, indwelling operational energy of God within a believer.
- Origin/Linguistics: Built on the root energeo, meaning to display activity, be operative, or put forth supernatural power.
- Evolution: Transitioned from physical or mechanical force in secular Greek to describe the invisible spiritual engine of God working inside the human will.
- Biblical Meaning & Modern Relevance: True Christian transformation is never a self-help project; it requires yielding your human effort to the divine energy operating in your heart (Philippians 2:13).
