Matthew 7:7-8 — Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened.

THE INVISIBLE WALL OF OVERTHINKING

“Just go talk to her,” my friend said.

I wanted to. We worked in the same building and she was beautiful, but every time I thought of walking over, my mind started racing:

What if I’m bothering her? What if I waste her time? What if I look stupid?

I lost the battle before I took a single step.

Overthinking can happen in dating, at work, in sports, with family, and even in our spiritual lives. It trains us to play it safe, weigh every risk, and rehearse a hundred worst-case scenarios before we have a chance to ask.

You don’t ask the girl, you don’t ask for the opportunity, and worst of all, you don’t bring your raw, bold requests to God. And you do not have because you do not ask (James 4:2).

God did not design you to live trapped in fear and anxiety. He gave us a spirit of power, love, and a sound mind (2 Timothy 1:7). Let’s look at how to crush anxiety and take bold action, using a page out of Mash’s playbook.

MASH - MASHLE: MAGIC AND MUSCLES

Look at Mash Burnedead in Mashle: Magic and Muscles. Mash operates with zero social friction because he refuses to overcomplicate his reality. In a society obsessed with complex magical status, elite titles, and posturing, Mash is entirely unbothered. If he wants a cream puff, he buys one. If he wants a terrifying villain to leave his friends alone, he plainly tells them to back off. He doesn’t stammer, he doesn’t rehearse fifty doom scenarios in his head, and he doesn’t give anyone else’s opinion the power to freeze him in place.

There is, however, a critical difference between Mash and a follower of Jesus. Mash relies entirely on self-generated physical muscle. His confidence comes from his own bench press. Our boldness runs far deeper: it is anchored in the finished work of Christ. As Scripture declares, “The Lord is my helper; I will not fear; what can man do to me?” (Hebrews 13:6).

JESUS ON ‘A DIVIDED MIND’

When you approach God, you never have to apologize for existing, present a flawless legal defense, or worry that you are “bothering” Him. He isn’t a distant judge checking His watch; He is a loving Father who commands you to ask.

So where does the anxiety come from? A Greek word for anxiety often used in the bible is merimna. It literally means a divided or fractured mind.

That is overthinking in a nutshell. Instead of your mind being whole, anchored, and present in Christ, merimna splits your focus into ten pieces, trying to solve problems that haven’t even happened yet.

In ancient Israel, the word was used to describe something that chokes or suffocates. That’s why Jesus said the cares (merimna) of the world choke out the seed in the Parable of the Sower. Overthinking strangles your peace, kills your momentum, and paralyzes your faith.

When fear of man tells you “don’t ask, you’ll be rejected,” Jesus says, “Ask, seek, knock, and approach My throne with confidence.”

When you know your eternal standing with God is secure in Christ (Romans 8:38–39), the fear of human rejection loses its power. You don’t need to overthink, over-analyze, or play it safe to avoid rejection or failure. You can drop the mental gymnastics, bring your requests boldly to the Throne, and take action.

DEVOTIONAL

1. Asking the Father

Draw near to God with unshakeable confidence, casting aside hesitation because your access was bought and paid for by Jesus.

Hebrews 4:16 — Let us then with confidence draw near (prosérchomai) to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.

Greek Toolkit: Prosérchomai (προσέρχομαι | pros-ER-khom-ahy): means to approach or draw near. In the ancient world, entering a king’s throne room without an explicit invitation could cost you your life. In Christ, this is transformed into an open-door guarantee.
The Anime Connection: Mash enters elite, intimidating spaces without flinching because he doesn’t care about their artificial hierarchies. You can enter God’s presence without fear because Christ has already qualified you to be there.

The Takeaway:

Like a loving Father, God delights when we seek Him. You can safely bring your honest struggles, needs, and requests directly to God without apologizing for asking. And when anxiety and overthinking tells you that He will be angry or annoyed with you, remind yourself that He has already welcomed you with open arms.

2. Asking your Community

Don’t be afraid to state what you need or make your intentions known to people. Because your worth and identity are already secured in Christ, their “yes” or “no” speaks only to their capacity and needs—not your value.

Hebrews 13:6 — “So we can confidently (tharreō) say, ‘The Lord is my helper; I will not fear; what can man do to me?”

Greek Toolkit: Tharreō (θαρρέω, thar-REH-oh): means to act with bold cheerfulness, free from inward trembling.
The Anime Connection: During the Divine Visionary Selection Exam, Mash faces a scary, sound-magic master Margarette Macaron. Instead of overthinking the threat or internalizing fear, Mash unbothered eats a cream puff mid-battle, states his simple goal directly, and punches straight through Margarette’s sound barriers. He treats a terrifying obstacle not as a crisis of identity, but as a simple door that needs to be opened.

The Takeaway:

Stop letting the fear of human disapproval freeze you. They are not your judge. Remember, your ultimate security is found in God. State your needs directly, make your invitations cleanly, and let people give an honest answer without tying your identity to their response.

3. Resting in Christ

Biblical persistence does not mean staying anxious. When you bring a need to God—or ask someone directly—you do not have to carry the burden of controlling the outcome.

Philippians 4:6-7 — “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests (aitēma) be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”

Greek Toolkit: Aitēma (αἴτημα – eye’-tay-mah): means a clear, specific request. You state the need honestly without beating around the bush.
The Anime Connection:When an obstacle is cleared or an action is done, Mash stops thinking about it. He does not sit around wondering if people approved of him or worrying about tomorrow. He does what is needed, drops the mental weight, and returns to his everyday routine.

The Takeaway:

Know the difference between praying persistently and worrying constantly. Keep bringing your needs to God, and follow up with people with clear communication when needed. But leave the final results in God’s hands. Make your request, receive His peace, and rest your mind.

WAKE UP CALL

If you can approach the Creator of the universe without fear or hesitation, you don’t need to cower before potential human rejection. Because God guarantees to meet your true needs (Philippians 4:19) and promises to direct your steps, a human “no” simply means that specific person is not the door God is using right now.

Next time that spiral kicks in, ask yourself these 3 questions:

The Motive Check: Am I manipulating them or being deceptive?
The Courtesy Check: Am I being polite, brief, and giving them an easy out to say no without guilt?
The Release Prayer: “Lord, I’ve made this clear and respectful. Their answer and their feelings are in Your hands, not mine.”

TAVERN TALK

Why is it so easy to let the fear of human disapproval dictate your decisions when Scripture says God has already fully accepted you?
What is one specific request, conversation, or boundary you have been delaying out of fear of looking awkward or getting rejected?
How does knowing that God holds your ultimate outcome free you to take a “no” from a person without taking it as a defeat?

APPENDIX

Aitēo (αἰτέω) – Verb (To ask, petition):
- Biblical Meaning: Making an earnest, direct request. Used in Matthew 7:7 as an imperative to petition God with zero false pretense or self-deprecating hesitation. In prayer, aitēo cuts through religious performance and speaks plainly to a Father who hears.
- Modern Relevance: It teaches us to ask clearly. In daily life, stop dropping passive-aggressive hints or beating around the bush—learn to make direct, respectful requests without fear.
Zēteō (ζητέω) – Verb (To seek, investigate, strive for):
- Biblical Meaning: An active, diligent search to track down God’s wisdom, will, and kingdom (Matthew 6:33). It describes moving forward with determined focus rather than sitting idle waiting for life to happen to you.
- Modern Relevance: It moves men away from passive drifting into purposeful stewardship. True spiritual discipline requires hunting down truth, sharpening your skills, and executing your responsibilities daily.
Krouō (κρούω) – Pronounced kroo’-o – Verb (To knock, strike repeatedly):
- Biblical Meaning: Striking a door to request entry. In Matthew 7:7–8, the present tense indicates an ongoing, persistent knock. In prayer, it reflects faithful perseverance before God.
- Modern Relevance: When dealing with earthly obstacles, it defines a man who takes initiative. You knock firmly on the doors in front of you. If God opens it, step through with gratitude. If the door remains locked, do not crash your identity against the frame—rest in God’s redirection and move forward.
